  A Simple, Fast, and Affordable VDI Solution from VMware and Tintri

  This report documents the results of ESG Lab’s hands-on testing of VMware Horizon View 5.1 with the Tintri VMstore platform. Testing focused on performance in the context of the end-user experience in a 1,000 seat virtual desktop environment. In addition, the ease of deployment, manageability, and cost-effectiveness of the Tintri solution in VMware environments were also examined.

  EMC Corporation’s IT organization launched a transformational journey toward cloud computing beginning in 2004. In 2009, ESG published an initial audit of EMC’s achievements, documenting their impressive initial savings on equipment and power as well as improvements in productivity, efficiency, and resource utilization. We published an update in 2010 as EMC reached important milestones in its server virtualization, tiering, and automation efforts.

  This 2013 update finds EMC leveraging the firm foundation of efficiency they have built; a key focus is on new levels of agility and productivity that EMC can achieve through a new cloud operating model for offering IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS). By sharing its experience through its EMC IT Proven program and a series of IT Audits, EMC offers a valuable service to other organizations that may have a vision for such a transformation but are struggling with what steps to take and what results to expect.

  Big data analytics is taking center stage among large midmarket and enterprise organizations that are looking to capture, refine, and analyze all types of data available to them on customer interactions and business operations. Driven by increasing data volume growth and the need for fast data processing and analytics, an emerging technology based on the open-source Apache Hadoop project is growing in popularity based on its ability to address big data needs with a cluster of industry-standard servers. Users are challenged to determine where Hadoop adds the most value in unified data architecture with best-of-breed components in the technology stack.

  This ESG Lab Validation report aims to inform decision makers who are considering options for a big data analytics platform and illustrate the complementary value of Teradata Aster and Hadoop as key components in a best-of-breed technology approach. ESG Lab compared Hadoop with Teradata Aster—since both platforms support MapReduce processing—to explore and contrast their strengths as components of big data architecture. ESG Lab assessed the ease of use, performance, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load), and analytic-readiness of Teradata Aster and Hadoop running multiple large data sets on real-world data models.

  The Future Is Now: Flash Throughout the Data Center

  In a recent blog, Steve Duplessie made a bold statement about the future of Solid-state Storage(SSS) in the Enterprise:

  People think about flash as a component of something. I think about it systemically – not inside a system, but inside the entire data center. The one who can orchestrate cache on flash throughout the entire data center is the one who will own the keys to the kingdom.

  I agree, but in my opinion we’ve got a long way to go before Steve's vision of fully integrated and orchestrated end-to-end SSS will be realized in the data center. For a bit of insight into the future of end-to-end SSS in the Enterprise, let's compare the adoption of SSS to the evolution of the disk-based data deduplication market over the past decade.
