The Delta-V Awards: Engineered Systems for Analytics

ESG's Delta-V awards recognize the top 20 companies that made an impact in big data and analytics in 2015. Here are the ones to applaud for their success in the category of Engineered Systems. You may be thinking, "wait, the whole point of big data is to go with commodity kit, not a big vendor appliance." You may also be wrong.

The Delta-V Awards: Databases

ESG's "Delta-V" awards recognize the top 20 companies that made an impact in big data and analytics in 2015. Here are the ones to applaud for their success in the category of Databases. Though there are way more than 20 databases on the market, we have only 20 spots for all of big data and analytics, so I've picked exactly two offerings that I think stood out this year.

The Delta-V Awards: 20 Companies That Changed Big Data in 2015

Avid readers will have no doubt noticed I've been unusually quiet lately. It's been a busy end to the year, wrapping up a lot of holiday gifts project deliverables for clients. Thankfully, I've also had some extra time to reflect on 2015 and all the big developments in the wide, wide world of big data and analytics. I'd like to share my lasting impressions of the year that was, and to make it even more special, I'm introducing the ESG "Delta-V" awards to give credit where credit is due.

Insights from IBM Insight

My dad was a programmer for IBM in the 1970s, but I doubt he’d recognize the company today. Heck, I hardly recognize the company today. In a conversation with an IBM executive on the Analytics business unit, I was asked today, “What is IBM missing?” My response was, “just the story to tie it all together.” Even setting aside Watson, this is a company with an (over-)abundance of analytics tools, BI products, and mature databases. Combine that portfolio with huge investments into Spark, Hadoop, an analytics-as-a-service, and a healthy roadmap for all, and it’s not a question of gaps but one of overlaps.

Pentaho's Three-Legged Race to Big Data (with HDS)

Pentaho World 2015 was held in sunny Orlando this year, with over 500 attendees, and was by all accounts a friendly and informative affair. About the only question no one could answer is why the company is called Pentaho, but a rose by any other name is still very nice. One thing that was quite clear is that the team is hitting its stride with HDS as a powerful running mate.

A Dell & EMC Merger = A Big Data & Analytics Powerhouse

So by now you have probably heard that Dell is planning on acquiring EMC, while leaving VMware as a publicly traded entity. Hot stuff indeed. This has big implications for the IT market as a whole, but I'm most interested in how it sets up change for the big data, database, and analytics space. A few immediate opportunities and a risk are in store:

Say IT Ten Times Fast

Big data has a real complexity/credibility problem. There are too many variables to the system that make even basic product evaluation tricky for even the sharpest technical decision maker in the IT shack. Let's say you want to achieve a simple design goal for your environment, such as speed (or velocity if you insist). Certainly there is much talk about "fast data" these days. Look at the vendors all promising a billion rows a second*... But hark, what asterisk through yonder window breaks? Well, what exactly do you want to be fast? Fast ingest? Fast data integration or transformation? Fast modeling? Fast discovery? Perhaps you mean fast analytical calculations? Or fast querying? Fast, fast, fast. Good luck.
