Video Series on Data Protection Appliances – Part 3, Cloud Gateway Appliances

Continuing our four-Friday video series, based on the recent ESG research report on the Shift toward Data Protection Appliances,

This installment covers cloud gateway appliances that are designed to be part of a data protection strategy. Early DP cloud gateways have a similar value-proposition as mainstream deduplication storage appliances in that they can be added to existing (or new) backup and archival infrastructures and automagically and radically reduce storage consumption through optimized protection storage. Typically, these gateways utilize a combination of fast local storage for immediate restores that then offloads previous versions and older copies to cloud-storage.

Video Series on Data Protection Appliances – Part 2, Deduplication Appliances

Continuing our four-Friday video series, based on the recent ESG research report on the Shift toward Data Protection Appliances,

This installment covers deduplication storage appliances – those wonderful storage devices that drop in existing (or new) backup and archival infrastructures and automagically and radically reduce storage consumption through optimized protection storage.

Video Series on Data Protection Appliances – Part 1, Backup Appliances

In March 2015, ESG published its research report on the Shift toward Data Protection Appliances. In ESG’s taxonomy, there are four types of DPAs in market today.

For the next four Fridays, I’ll be releasing videos (about 4 minutes long each), detailing why each type of DPA is interesting, current and anticipated usage trends, etc. Why Fridays? Because Fridays deserve something easy, and DPAs offer all kinds of easy.

Why ExaGrid & Veeam are Rockin' VM Backup and Restore - and ROI

Let's face it, you built your data center for one reason: to generate revenue. The return on investment of your hardware, software, and people really depends on what you do with that infrastructure: Is it mostly used for production activities? Or is there a lot of time when users are stymied because there’s a backup running? How much time is spent on essential—but non-production—activities like data protection?

Backup is the first line of defense, and if you’re like most organizations, you do some kind of backup daily, weekly, and monthly. To get the most out of your infrastructure and IT staff, you want to spend as little time and effort as possible on backup, but still be ready to restore fast. To that end, a common practice is to do incremental backups daily, and then once a week or so roll those incremental changes up into a synthetic full backup. This gives you a full backup that’s easier to restore from, but taking less time out of production.

HP announces StoreOnce Catalyst for better deduplication

This week at HP Discover 2012, HP announced StoreOnce Catalyst as a software accelerator (API toolset) that enables its HP StoreOnce backup appliances to achieve up to 100TB/hour in backups – and in restores, too! Along with support for HP’s own Data Protector 7 (also announced at Discover), the StoreOnce family supports Symantec NetBackup and will add Backup Exec within a few months.

Touting the next generation of deduplication methodology, and a unified deduplication methodology that enables data to be deduplicated at the source, the backup server or the storage – and then stay that way throughout the data protection infrastructure.
