Looking towards Data Management and Enablement in 2018 (Video)

Posted: August 28, 2017   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, Copy Data Management, CDM-DME, Data Management & Enablement

JasonBCDM.jpgCopy Data Management (CDM) and all the permutations of “Copy” “Data” “Management” with or without additional terms like “Active” “Enterprise” “Virtualization,” etc., seems to be the rage these days. A few years ago, there was only one visionary company talking about CDM. Today, we see a range of vendors now claiming to be CDM, even when they don’t deliver the breadth of capabilities that the industry may have presumed CDM to be; and others who have been quietly delivering those capabilities and more, without the terminology (a.k.a. they were CDM before CDM was cool).

Long Term Data Retention is Evolving – Are You? (Video)

Posted: July 10, 2017   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, Data Management, Archiving, Copy Data Management, Long-Term Data Retention

JBuff_LTRS.jpgIt seems like every few months, a new regulation or mandate pops up to remind people to 1) keep their data longer and/or 2) delete it as soon as necessary. Those two edicts are not contrary to each other as long as you do them in that sequence; first, understand your retention requirements and then delete data beyond that retention date. But there is sooooo much more to it than that, since not all data has the same regulatory or operational retention benefits or requirements.

If you haven’t seen it already, please check out my earlier vBlog on “The Good, Better, Best of Data Management

The Dell acquisition of EMC is complete.  Most of the leadership shifts and organizational realignments have happened.  The previously Dell Software data protection solution components have moved on under the Quest banner. In short, now that the dust has settled, Dell EMC’s data protection story is ready to move forward.

The Good, Better, Best of Data Management (Video)

Posted: April 24, 2017   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, Copy Data Management

Data Management, meaning the maturation of data protection and data preservation that adds contextual insight based on the data and the enablement of re-use of the data for other purposes, is a journey that all of us are on – whether we know it or not.

  • Maybe you’re just trying to get “good” data protection and retention.
  • Maybe you’ve got “good” but are looking for “better” (and smarter) data preservation.
  • Or maybe you’ve got or are working through “better” but want the “best” – whereby you are not only doing data protection and preservation, but are unlocking new business value and usage scenarios for your otherwise dormant data (BC/DR, reporting/analytics, DevOps enablement, etc.) through what many in the industry now call “Copy Data Management."

Y Evolve Your Data Protection Strategy in 2017 (Video)

Posted: February 10, 2017   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Backup, Data Protection, Data Management, BC/DR (business continuity/disaster recovery), High Availability, Copy Data Management

Y2017.jpegToday’s message is brought to you by the letter “Y” and the numbers “1” and “7.”

Most data protection conversations are evolving from “backup” to “recovery” – and to do that, you need to evolve from simply using backup mechanisms to a combination of backups, snapshots, and replicas. And some vendors are there (YAY)!

But then, many vendors, and providers, and partners, and IT teams get stuck at a crossroads – where their data protection strategy must further evolve down one of two paths, with very few vendors able to offer journeys down both long and winding roads: Data Management & Data Availability.

Here is a short video on Y and how your data protection technologies must evolve.

The 5 Cs of data protection

Posted: June 13, 2016   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Backup, Snapshots, Replication, Data Protection, BCDR, CDM, Copy Data Management

data protectionData management — not data protection — is the future.

We are already seeing the shift in many organizations where there are fewer dedicated ‘backup administrators’ and more diversified workload/platform owners (DBAs, vAdmins, File/Storage admins, IT operations, etc.) defining backup jobs or invoking restores, coupled with infrastructure that truly has data protection “built in.”

With so much revolution (not just evolution) happening in data protection, it is easy to imagine a future where folks care less about which repositories or data protection methods (backups, snapshots, replicas) are in use – and more about:

  1. How many copies do I need?
  2. How long do I need which versions?
  3. Where do they need to be to satisfy my SLAs?

How to evolve from "data protection" to "data management"

Posted: May 02, 2016   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, Data Management, CDM, Copy Data Management

To evolve from backup to data protection is to embrace complementary mechanisms that enable a much broader range of preservation of data, protection of data, and the assurance of productivity through enhanced availability initiatives, as seen in ESG’s Spectrum of Data Protection.

Why Copy Data Management Matters

Posted: February 13, 2015   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, Copy Data Management

My article for this month’s TechTarget column is on “Why Copy Data Management Matters.”

In ESG’s Archive & Backup Convergence research, we found that a majority of IT organizations are either using or looking at solutions that managed the “copy data” within their environment:
