Wrap-Up on Backup – from Dell EMC World 2017

Posted: May 16, 2017   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, Data Domain, integrated infrastructure, data protection appliances, Dell EMC World

I had pre-blogged before this event about looking for the unified narrative that knits together a breadth of DP products in a more focused way via the newly (re)formed Data Protection Division within the Dell EMC institution.

Video Series on Data Protection Appliances – Part 4, Failover BC/DR Appliances

Data_Protection_AppliancesThe last installment in our four-Friday video series, based on the recent ESG research report on the Shift toward Data Protection Appliances,

Part four covers what might be the most interesting, albeit nascent category – failover or BC/DR appliances. While the other three categories are predominantly based on or designed for the same “backup/restore” type methodology, BC/DR failover appliances are more often designed around a replication-centric data mover coupled with some hypervisor or compute-cloud means of “resuming services” instead of “restoring data.”

Video Series on Data Protection Appliances – Part 3, Cloud Gateway Appliances

Posted: May 08, 2015   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Hybrid Cloud Storage, Data Protection, PBBA, DPA, Cloud Gateway, cloud storage, backup-to-disk, data protection appliances, backup-to-cloud

Data_Protection_AppliancesContinuing our four-Friday video series, based on the recent ESG research report on the Shift toward Data Protection Appliances,

This installment covers cloud gateway appliances that are designed to be part of a data protection strategy. Early DP cloud gateways have a similar value-proposition as mainstream deduplication storage appliances in that they can be added to existing (or new) backup and archival infrastructures and automagically and radically reduce storage consumption through optimized protection storage. Typically, these gateways utilize a combination of fast local storage for immediate restores that then offloads previous versions and older copies to cloud-storage.

Data_Protection_AppliancesContinuing our four-Friday video series, based on the recent ESG research report on the Shift toward Data Protection Appliances,

This installment covers deduplication storage appliances – those wonderful storage devices that drop in existing (or new) backup and archival infrastructures and automagically and radically reduce storage consumption through optimized protection storage.

This week, I offered some perspectives on What Makes a Good Backup Appliance, and I'd like to offer some further perspective on these types of products.

What Makes a Good Backup Appliance - Part 3 of 3

Posted: March 05, 2015   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, DPA, backup appliances, data protection appliances

In my earlier posts from this series, I discussed adoption rates and rationales for purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs) over do-it-yourself (DIY) backup servers and then explored some top-level DIY vs PBBA determinants and non-determinants.

Start with ease-of-architecture/acquisition (covered in part 2), meaning right-sized parts that are assured to work well together – and the convenience of a shorter PO as a side-benefit. After that, “DIY vs PBBA” really is all about integration and enablement. To add color to that conversation, here are some ideas of what a Good, Better, and Best PBBA might look like.

What Makes a Good Backup Appliance - Part 2 of 3

Posted: March 04, 2015   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, PBBA, DPA, backup appliances, data protection appliances

In my earlier post about the characteristics of good backup appliances, I discussed the increasing usage rates of purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs) by those organizations that embrace them. But after listening to several sessions at IBM Interconnect last week, including discussing our upcoming research report on data protection appliances (DPAs), I started thinking about, what makes up a good backup appliance over simply installing backup software onto a physical server?

What Makes a Good Backup Appliance - Part 1 of 3

Posted: March 03, 2015   /   By: Jason Buffington   /   Tags: Data Protection, PBBA, DPA, backup appliances, data protection appliances

In general, I am a fan of data protection appliances (DPAs), noting that purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs) are just one of four categories of DPAs that are in market today.  Read more about the four categories of DPAs in my earlier blog
