VMworld 2017: The Year of the Cloud

clouds.jpgIf you missed VMworld this year, let me attempt to summarize the key themes; Cloud, Cloud, and more Cloud. Officially, VMworld delivered a message of “any app, on any cloud, to any device,” and included themes of mobility and data security. After the moment in the keynote when VMware’s Pat Gelsinger hugged Andy Jassy of Amazon Web Services, however, the only thing that the on-premises infrastructure providers in the audience heard was the word, cloud.

The newly announced capability, VMware Cloud on AWS, is an on-demand service that enables applications to run across vSphere-based cloud environments with access to AWS infrastructure along with some of its services. At a higher level though, the announcement delivers the perfect statement that the hybrid cloud is here and it is here to stay. These two companies that just a short time ago were seen as competitors have now joined forces. The bulk of the questions that will emerge from this announcement, however, will not have to be answered by the public cloud, though. It will be the on-premises infrastructure providers that will have to respond.

Vendors under the radar: Syncplicity

cloud storageNext up in my under-the-radar series is Syncplicity. I went back and forth about whether or not to include Syncplicity as an under-the-radar vendor. Certainly they wouldn't have qualified a year ago. But do they now?

An emerging product in an emerging market fighting for budget within EMC is a difficult position to be in. And one of the big story lines from the investors that took Syncplicity private is that Syncplicity has huge potential, but couldn't thrive in EMC because the sales models weren't aligned properly and they couldn't invest for growth. When it came to budget allocations, the products paying the bills got more investment (or Syncplicity's tactical integration with those products was prioritized versus more strategic development efforts).

Video Series on Data Protection Appliances – Part 3, Cloud Gateway Appliances

Data_Protection_AppliancesContinuing our four-Friday video series, based on the recent ESG research report on the Shift toward Data Protection Appliances,

This installment covers cloud gateway appliances that are designed to be part of a data protection strategy. Early DP cloud gateways have a similar value-proposition as mainstream deduplication storage appliances in that they can be added to existing (or new) backup and archival infrastructures and automagically and radically reduce storage consumption through optimized protection storage. Typically, these gateways utilize a combination of fast local storage for immediate restores that then offloads previous versions and older copies to cloud-storage.

A Storage Strategy Built for the Future

We know the benefits that cloud storage can offer organizations - flexibility, agility, and elasticity more efficiently at lower costs. And that’s really just the start. Once you factor in the potential to address business continuity and productivity concerns with instant backup, archive, and disaster recovery plans, it’s turning into a no brainer. This, of course, doesn’t mean you should only use cloud storage. On-premises, primary storage is still important, especially for those mission-critical applications with strict performance SLAs.
