With EMC World 2016 just over the horizon, EMC made a couple announcements this week that I thought I would touch on.

Dell brings VCE into its hyperconverged tent

Dell just announced several new additions to their hyperconverged infrastructure portfolio and, not surprisingly, the bulk of these announcements were centered around their new partnership with VCE.

Prior to this announcement, Dell’s lone hyperconverged offering was its Nutanix OEM “XC” line of hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI). Dell says that they have seen great success with selling the XC — to the tune of 10x year over year sales growth since they began offering it in 2014. So they were eager to dispel any notion that their Nutanix partnership was going away anytime soon.

Bringing Increased Choice to Hybrid Cloud: Nutanix Version 4.6

2016 could be a boon year for hyperconverged vendors. As I covered in a recent blog/video, nearly 70% of IT respondents to ESG’s survey on hybrid cloud trends indicated they plan to adopt hyperconverged solutions. While this is clearly a bullish signal, one area that gives IT planners cause for concern is vendor lock-in. In fact, these same IT respondents cited “giving too much control to one vendor” and “vendor lock-in” as two reasons that might dissuade them from using hyperconverged technology. But what if a hyperconverged solution could allay these concerns by helping businesses eliminate hypervisor software lock-in?

2016 - A Banner Year for Converged and Hyperconverged Vendors?

2016 could prove to be a banner year for converged and hyperconverged technologies. In ESG's recent survey on Hybrid Cloud trends, 56% of IT planners indicated that they plan to use converged infrastructure (CI) and 70% said they plan to use hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI).

The new buying dynamics for storage, servers, and converged infrastructure

For 50 years we’ve bought stuff based on what the “box” could do – how much capacity, how fast, how expensive. We made our decision, picked our vendor, and we lived with it.

When we ran out of something, we bought another box. And another. We loved our first box, and hated our 87th. Such has been the life of the infrastructure buyer.

In A World Of Converged and Hyperconverged Choice, Fear Abounds

According to the American Psychiatric Association, agoraphobia is defined as, "an irrational anxiety about being in places from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing". While there is no official designation for fear of vendor lock-in, perhaps there should be. Perhaps "vendor-agoraphobia"?

SimpliVity OmniStack 3.0 - The Hyperconverged Power of 3

Numerologists point to the significance of the number “3” as holding great physical and spiritual import. It is linked to multiplicity, creative power, and growth. Hyperconverged player SimpliVity is looking to tap into this triad of abundance with the release of OmniStack 3.0, a major operating system release for its OmniCube hyperconverged platform solution.

Nutanix: Not Storage and Not Hyperconverged

I attended Nutanix’s first end-user conference and it was good to hear directly from its spokespeople as opposed to the market hype we all get exposed to. Nutanix’s goal is to take complex infrastructure and make it simple. In fact, they went as far as to say they want to make infrastructure invisible.
