Narrative of Nutanix .NEXT in NOLA

Well Nutanix .NEXT has come and gone and as I continue to digest all the announcements from Nutanix, one word comes to mind that expresses my thoughts: ambition. Why? They don't want to just be the HCI infrastructure in a data center. They want to be the data center. They want to enable hybrid cloud. They want to enable multi-cloud. They want to simplify the smart edge and enable IoT. And they want all the complexity associated with all of it to be invisible.

And the Current Number #1 Challenge with HCI Is…

While HCI offers several impressive benefits related to simplicity, manageability, scalability, and cost savings, challenges still exist. ESG asked over 200 IT pros who have implemented HCI what their top challenges are since implementing HCI in their organization and the most commonly cited challenge was difficulty finding the root cause of issues. And when you think about it, it makes sense.

The Need for Speed and Automation: Enterprise Storage in 2018 (Video)

Recently, I was able to get some time in front of a camera to discuss my predictions for enterprise storage in 2018. The video is below, but let me provide a brief spoiler with two of the top highlights.

  • Flash continues its dominance with the rise of NVMe: I will talk more about NVMe as the year goes on, but in a nutshell NVMe unlocks the true potential of flash, and that potential is far more than just high performance.

What's .NEXT for Nutanix?

This week Nutanix kicks off .NEXT, its annual user conference. I'm looking forward to it because it provides such a great opportunity to catch up with many Nutanix customers, partners, and executives in a very short time. I have to be careful not to get lost in the echo chamber though—when I attended my first .NEXT last year, it was a bit surreal. It was like being at a cult meeting—Nutanix users I spoke with were seriously enthusiastic about the Nutanix experience!

That was Fast! HPE Closes SimpliVity Acquisition

That was fast! HPE only announced it planned to acquire hyperconverged software vendor SimpliVity on January 17, and it closed exactly one month later, on February 17. Why the hurry? Because they need to!

You can't let a market get away from you, and hyperconverged is a fast growing market. When ESG surveyed IT managers responsible for cloud infrastructure decisions, we learned that hyperconverged systems are playing a huge role in IT's plans. When ESG surveyed IT managers responsible for cloud infrastructure, we found that 85% of them are using or plan to adopt hyperconverged solutions.

What's in Store for Converged and Hyperconverged Systems in 2017? (Video)

We saw strong adoption of both converged and hyerconverged systems in 2016—and we expect that to continue into 2017. While converged systems have been out for a while and have strong market penetration, expect hyperconverged to come on strong this year as these systems continue to mature for tier-1 workload support. The strong performance of the Nutanix IPO certainly drove some attention on the hyperconverged side, as did the recent HPE buyout of SimpliVity

Cloud Computing: Predictions for 2017 (Video) - Part 3!

One of the best parts of my job is that I get to work with very smart people, providing me with the opportunity to learn something new or look at things from new angles, every single day! Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting the anchor leg in the 2017 cloud computing predictions video roundtable, in which I asked cloud and networking analyst Dan Conde and systems management analyst Edwin Yuen about their thoughts on cloud trends in 2017 as they apply to converged and hyperconverged systems.

2017 Enterprise Storage Predictions (Video)

With 2016 behind us, I recently had some time to sit down and record my thoughts on the storage industry for 2017. While I do not wish to spoil the predictions in the video too much, there are a few key points that I would like to make to set the stage.

  1. Public cloud services are fundamentally transforming the storage industry, to a point where the industry could look very different in five years.
  2. In response, on-premises storage solutions have seen insane levels of innovation over the past couple of years, in technologies such as all-flash, hyperconverged infrastructure, and software-defined storage.
  3.  However, the multi-billion dollar question is, “Is it enough?”

Lenovo and Nimble Storage Join Forces

Today, Lenovo and Nimble Storage announced a joint partnership, furthering the capabilities and the reach of both companies. The near–term product offering that results from the partnership will be Lenovo’s ThinkAgile CX converged system available on October 28th, with Nimble providing the storage element. From a business perspective, the deal makes so much sense for both companies; the real question may be what took them so long.

First, let’s start with the obvious benefits. Lenovo gets access to Nimble’s Predictive Flash technology for its converged offering, rounding out its storage portfolio and adding a larger scale converged offering to pair with its existing hyperconverged solutions from the partnership with Nutanix. Nimble Storage gains access to Lenovo’s substantial enterprise sales channel. While the immediate impact will likely be a boost in revenue for both companies, this partnership looks like it goes beyond the simple reselling of technology.

Hyperconverged infrastructure vendor Nutanix goes on a buying spree

Today Nutanix announced it is acquiring Pernix Data and Calm.IO. Not a lot of details were announced, but these acquisitions provide a clear view into Nutanix’s broader strategy and future aspirations. Why? Because, as my colleague Mark Peters likes to say, over recent decades we have slowly moved from IT standing (as it was intended to) for “information technology” to it really being all about “infrastructure technology”.
