Hitachi Data For Hitachi Solutions

Hitachi held court at its own Innovation Forum in Tokyo, Japan last week, and the main message was the imperative for "social innovation," defined as using technology to create a better world and improve people's lives. This is not to be confused with the social innovations of Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, or the like, and while it sounds like the loftiest of corporate mission statements, there is some real potential here.

Lysi-Strata - Big Data’s Act I

This was my first visit to the O’Reilly Strata Conference, and I was impressed by the energy. Many IT industry tradeshows feel like they are in a slow decline, so it was refreshing to see all the buzz around the big data market. Judging from the sheer number of exhibitors, the quality of the talks, and the quality of attendees, the world is now ready to get serious on innovating and implementing new solutions.

So if “the medium is the message,” as Marshall McLuhan says, the theatrical performance was an instant Greek classic, complete with star cameos, love sub-plots, and a couple of good wars.

In Closing: Four Strata Winners Address Sort and R

In a previous blog I fashioning-hadoop-distributions-for-the-enterprise-strata-sphere/index.html" target="_blank">examined the new Hadoop distributions that were unveiled around the time of the Strata Santa Clara 2013 conference. Not wanting to give short shrift to other announcements around the conference, here are four other winning and/or particularly creative unveilings. Note that not every related announcement was listed on the Strata Santa Clara 2013 home page, and not every announcement came out through a press release. My winners had to do with two subtle but fundamental subjects in the big data space, sorting, and R. Without further ado:
