Data Protection Market Trends
ESG recently surveyed 398 North American IT decision makers regarding their organizations' current and planned uses of data protection processes and technology. For the purposes of this survey, data protection was defined as:
Any process or technology that makes a secondary copy of a given data set so that business operations may continue in the event of the loss of the primary copy of the data.
Examples of data protection processes and technologies include backup and recovery, data replication, snapshots and continuous data protection (CDP).

In studying these organizations' data protection priorities and plans, ESG's sought to answer the following questions:
- What are organizations' primary data protection challenges?
- Which specific applications create the most difficult data protection challenges?
- How successful are organizations in meeting their data protection objectives?
- Which types of data protection technologies and processes are currently in use? Which do organizations plan to use?
- How satisfied are organizations are with their current data protection technologies and strategies?
- Where do organizations believe there is room to improve their data protection processes?
- What types of storage solutions are currently used to support data protection requirements and how will this change over time?
- To what extent have capacity reduction technologies such as data de-duplication been deployed?
- What benefits are customers experiencing from the use of capacity reductions technologies?
- From which vendors and service providers do/will customers prefer to purchase data protection solutions?
- Which factors most strongly influence data protection vendor selection and loyalty?
To help answer these questions, ESG conducted an online survey of 398 IT professionals at North American private- and public-sector organizations.
