In this market, virtual tape library (VTL) solutions have emerged as an early favorite among current users for all of the above reasons, but perhaps most importantly because of its inherent design: VTL is intended to slip easily and non-disruptively into existing data protection environments, in most cases allowing users to continue to use the backup applications in which they have invested heavily over the years and follow the backup processes to which they are well-accustomed.
Against this backdrop, and with the increasing popularity of VTL in mind, ESG conducted this survey to answer questions such as:
- Is backup to tape still common among users? How well-entrenched is disk-based backup?
- Is the VTL market growing? Has adoption stalled or picked up since our last VTL-related research survey? What is driving VTL adoption? What are the obstacles to VTL growth, if any?
- Have VTL solutions met users' expectations? What types of benefits are organizations seeing from their VTL implementations?
- Is data de-duplication on the users' radars? What about security features or search capabilities? Is VTL adoption limited to local implementations or is it also being used as backup targets for remote office/branch office (ROBO) data protection?
To answer these questions, ESG surveyed 228 IT and business professionals at North American public & private sector organizations of varying sizes.
