ESG Brief: A Data Center Revolution in Storage Technology

Abstract:

The storage technology landscape has evolved dramatically over the past few years. Data centers once dominated by SAN and NAS arrays now include all-flash arrays, software-defined storage, and even hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) technology. The introductions of these new technologies have fundamentally altered the storage technology landscape, changing the makeup of the data center, as well as the organizational structure and/or flexibility of the IT staffing. And these shifts may just be the early signs of the revolution in storage, as it moves away from multiple isolated technologies each with its own expert to fewer, more powerful, and automated technologies.

ESG Brief: Impact of Cloud Computing on the Network

Abstract:

Cloud computing has made a significant impact on IT. How and where organizations consume, build, and run critical business applications have changed dramatically. As more organizations turn to cloud computing, ESG sought to understand what kind of an impact this transition has had on the network, with specific regard to short-term spending and long-term strategy decisions.

ESG Brief: Impact of Cloud-first IT on Enterprise Mobility

Abstract:

A cloud-first approach can have economic and operational benefits for businesses, but the policy also comes with responsibilities to protect applications and users. The challenge for IT is to get in front of this cloud-first trend with identity and access management strategies, security processes, and monitoring investments that will embrace cloud consumption models with confidence.

ESG Brief: Reliable Virtualization Protection Continues to Elude Many Organizations

Abstract:

Protecting and recovering VMs can be daunting, especially when trying to meet stringent service level agreements for availability/uptime. Backup and recovery software is supposed to make the job easier, but it often doesn’t. At least the root of the problem is apparent—unreliable virtualization protection boils down to a failure by IT departments to modernize their IT protection environments when they modernize their IT production environments.

ESG Brief: Multi-cloud Strategies Are on the Rise

Abstract:

ESG has found that a significant number of companies are already using public cloud infrastructure services, and that a wave-like shift of workloads to public cloud is already occurring. How are organizations approaching their public cloud infrastructure strategies in terms of the number of providers with which they partner, and do they see these services simply augmenting existing on-premises environments or as a means of revolutionizing them?

ESG Brief: Is a VM-specific Approach to Backup and Recovery Still Necessary in 2017?

Abstract:

For the past several years, ESG has monitored the trend of adopting VM-specific technologies for backup and recovery versus a “unified” solution that protects both physical and virtual servers. This recap of recent ESG research examines the question of whether today’s organizations are using a unified solution or a VM-specific solution for their virtual environments—and what those organizations expect to do moving forward.

ESG Brief: Cloud and Systems Management Buying Preferences

Abstract:

While hybrid cloud strategies continue to gain momentum, to date, there has been limited understanding of the buying preferences of companies considering hybrid cloud. Specifically, what do IT decision makers want when it comes to how on-premises infrastructure and/or systems management vendors fit their hybrid cloud objectives?

ESG Brief: Cloud Increases Systems Management Complexity and Capability

Abstract:

The continued rise in the use of public cloud infrastructure services has not been accompanied by an equivalent rise in systems management capabilities to support managing those services. As companies extend their on-premises infrastructure to the off-premises cloud world, the need for them to understand the systems management capabilities and challenges has become critical.
