“It’s one of the most bizarre business models I’ve ever seen,” said Steve Duplessie, a senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group in Milford. “The more they sell, the more they lose.”No company has figured out how to make money selling online data backup to consumers, Duplessie said. For instance, Mozy, a Carbonite-like service offered by the Hopkinton-based storage titan EMC Corp., has failed to catch on.To make online backup pay, Duplessie said, Carbonite will have to boost its offerings to businesses, who will pay more than consumers for backups.
