Jon Oltsik and I have written an ESG brief on the Group-based policy, a open source project within OpenStack and OpenDaylight project that enables high level abstractions for controlling networks, although it can be generalized for compute, security, and storage. The brief is available to ESG subscription clients only, but I have summarized a few points below.
- Although the origins of this project and its policy-based infrastructure are from Cisco’s ACI (Application Centric Infrastructure) project, the commercialization and integration by third parties shows that it is succeeding as an independent project with benefits for the broader networking industry.
- Adding the use cases to support service chaining enables its use in network function virtualization (NFV).
- Future directions to improve its status within Openstack, user interface, and other aspects will improve its standing and acceptance within the open source community.
