Importance of Software in Networking

I've written an ESG brief on the Importance of Software in Networking. It's available to ESG subscription clients only, but I have summarized a few points below.

I discussed some of these topics in my earlier blogs titled: Focus on the the Networking Software and not just the Silicon underneath, part 1 and part 2 but want to emphasize that:

  • End-users need to examine the software of the devices they purchase, not just the hardware.
  • Vendors must focus on the core customers' problems, and not emphasize the manner in which the hardware provides for them.

If you examine the investment in software projects by networking vendors such as Brocade in an OpenDaylight based controller, Cisco in SDN solutions, Juniper in Contrail, and Extreme Networks in management capabilities, you will realize that's where the game will be played.
