The Need for Better Monitoring of Cloud-native Applications

GettyImages-515524756As companies adopt new technologies to support digital transformation, the need to update and adapt their monitoring and management tools becomes more and more critical. Companies that have already started to leverage public cloud and more cloud-native applications are finding that they need better monitoring tools, with the capability to monitor new application frameworks and a more application, rather than infrastructure, orientation. ESG conducted research on companies that were already using two or more public cloud providers and when we asked what they have learned about systems management based on their public cloud experiences, 30% responded they need better application and end-user experience monitoring of workloads.

We have been seeing new solutions in the market that evolved from traditional Application Performance Management (APM) and agent-based application monitoring solutions. For example, LightStep has been discussing the concept of [x]PM with their SaaS-based monitoring solution, integrating traditional on-premises monitoring with more cloud-native workloads. They recently announced support for monitoring microservices, as well as the use of histograms to visualize application performance in real time.

Another company adapting to these new workloads is Solarwinds. Solarwinds has recently released Solarwinds Cloud, which is a portfolio of products they have recently acquired. These solutions include:

  • AppOptics for infrastructure and application monitoring.
  • Loggly for unified log monitoring and analytics.
  • Papertrail for cloud-based log management.
  • Pingdom for Web performance and end-user experience monitoring.

I think the market will quickly evolve to support a wider range of monitoring and there is room for real innovation in performance management and monitoring. Organizations should start looking at their existing management solutions now and determine whether these new capabilities are being introduced to their existing platform or whether they need to augment/replace to keep up with how their entire workload environments are evolving.
