The Impact of Server Refreshes on the Server and HCI Markets

As of late, the server market has been heating up. Companies like Dell, IBM, Cisco, Super Micro, and Huawei all saw growth in server shipments, while many saw double digit revenue growth year-over-year. So what’s driving the growth? Some argue it’s from the big web-scalers like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, and to an extent, that is true. When the big guys do something, many follow suit, but I think the growth is also due in part to the mandate within many organizations to digitally transform by leveraging HCI.

Highlights from ESG’s Enterprise On-premises Infrastructure Spending Trends Research (Video)

ESG conducted research on the spending intentions of 651 IT decision makers to determine how 2018 may differ from previous years.

We found out that the majority of organizations were largely going to keep their infrastructure spend flat or even reduce the amount they spend on infrastructure. For many organizations this can be attributed to two initiatives – Hyperconverged and Cloud.

The Need for Speed and Automation: Enterprise Storage in 2018 (Video)

Recently, I was able to get some time in front of a camera to discuss my predictions for enterprise storage in 2018. The video is below, but let me provide a brief spoiler with two of the top highlights.

  • Flash continues its dominance with the rise of NVMe: I will talk more about NVMe as the year goes on, but in a nutshell NVMe unlocks the true potential of flash, and that potential is far more than just high performance.

It's Still Early for Converged and Hyperconverged – Predictions for 2018 (Video)

I was waiting on releasing my 2018 predictions for converged and hyperconverged infrastrucuture because I wanted to leverage a key data point from our recent spending intentions research. From an IT infrastructure standpoint, this year’s data had some particularly compelling data points regarding areas of opportunity where senior IT decision makers feel they can significantly streamline costs. More than half of organizations (54%) feel their on-premises storage and/or networking infrastructure is where their costs can be streamlined. My colleague Mark Peters recently wrote a great brief on the subject, but here is my quick take...

HCI Performance Evaluation

As I discussed in Motive, Means, and Opportunity for Evaluating HCI Performance, performance is a key HCI buying criteria.

Motive, Means, and Opportunity for Evaluating HCI Performance

With all the hype surrounding hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), ESG’s technical validation practice has been busy evaluating various HCI solutions.

Motive

According to my colleagues Mike Leone, Edwin Yuen, and Terri McClure, organizations are now confident enough in HCI that they’re deploying HCI as their primary infrastructure housing their tier-1 applications. Thus, buying criteria has evolved from answering “Can this offering support my applications?” to “How well can it support my application?”

Understanding The Hype Around Hyperconverged Infrastructure

There is a lot of hype around hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI). All the big vendors and a number of lesser-known smaller ones are in the game. Dell EMC has doubled down on its HCI portfolio investments; NetApp is entering the market leveraging its Solidfire technology; HPE is investing in growing its SimpliVity line; Cisco acquired Springpath so it could offer its own line, but it also partners with Nutanix, HPE and just about everyone else! Speaking of Nutanix, it was a category pioneer (along with SimpliVity) and its Dell EMC branded business is still growing, even though Dell EMC has somewhat competing products with VxRack and VxRail (the 3 HCI products serve different use cases - a topic for another blog!). Nutanix is also doing a healthy business through Lenovo and its channel partners and it has an agreement with IBM to offer its HCI on Power systems. Lesser-known (but fast growing) Pivot3 just announced 50% growth in bookings! Hitachi Vantara has a product it is also leveraging for Lumada IoT, and VMware sells vSAN for HCI use cases. I'm still just scratching the surface- I know I've left some vendors out - it's a long list!

Do you want to deploy HCI? How do you compare solutions?

Hyperconverged infrastructures (HCI) are one of the drivers of the current data center revolution—39% of organizations have already deployed their first HCI solution.

Storage Trends Research – The Impact of CI/HCI (#3 in a series) - includes video

ESG recently completed in-depth research on the state of the storage market; its own technologies and market trends as well as its key intersections to other notable IT implementations and shifts. We are presenting some of the extended highlights from the findings in multiple ESG Briefs (each focused on a particular topic), as well as tighter summaries of those Briefs in accompanying ESG videos. These will be rolling out over the next few weeks and we’ll capture all the available links in these blogs each time a new piece is posted.

Data Protection Is (or Should Be) Increasingly Part of a Systems Management Strategy (Video)

Think about it. If I’m an IT Operations team member:

  • I provision new servers (usually VMs), but some physical and some cloud-based.
  • I patch and maintain those servers.
  • I provide or rescind access to the applications on those servers.
  • I monitor those servers for performance and uptime.
  • And when those servers go down, I am the first one who gets called.
