See You at Extreme Connect

This week I am escaping the cold and wet northeast to head to the warm and sunny climate of Scottsdale, Arizona to attend the Extreme Networks customer event aptly named “Connect.” While there, I will take part in an analyst panel hosted by Norman Rice, the Extreme CMO, discussing trends and initiatives that are impacting the network.

Citrix Synergy 2018: What’s in Store?

Citrix Synergy is an event fueled by the inspiring stories about how businesses are helping redefine how people work in today’s dynamic business environment. I see the event as an opportunity for companies to learn how they can reshape existing business processes, and adapt to new employee and customer workstyles. In addition to the event, I’m fascinated by the new challenges that IT and information security professionals have in front of them as they strive to embrace new experiences, while protecting an unpredictable IT environment littered with potential threats.

Aruba Creates an Infectious (in the good sense!) Atmosphere -- includes video

I must say that any place where being an “airhead” is a good thing is probably going to get my attention! At Aruba’s Atmosphere event, the airheads (Aruba user-community members) are what it’s all about. It’s easy to dismiss such terminology as just an amusing collective name except for two simple facts: first, there’s a lot of them….tens of thousands globally with plenty of them milling around the Mandalay Bay; and second the flip side to such a name cannot obscure the “raving fan” aspect that seems to permeate this company and its culture. Yes, I’m well aware that most attendees were actually Aruba customers, but the event retained the feel of a sales kick off (you know, the “we’re all in this together” type of atmosphere).

Aruba - Driving Innovation to the Intelligent Edge

Last week Mark Peters and I attended the Aruba (an HPE company) Atmosphere event in Las Vegas. It has been three years since Aruba became part of HPE and officially took over all campus switching from HP.

So, you may ask, how are they doing? Well, as it turns out, they are doing pretty darn well. According to CEO Keerti Melkote, Aruba has achieved 15% growth to result in 2.5B in 2017, with a nearly 50/50 mix of wired to wireless (perhaps a tad more on the wireless side). All of this results in Aruba having about a 20 percent market share.

THINK-ing about IBM (includes video)

The month of March in the US signifies its eponymous “Madness” (it’s big college basketball tournaments for those of you reading from places it does not reach); perhaps to give a nod to that, IBM did a few things to create its own madness at its “Think” event in Las Vegas. There was the frustration type of madness with the registration system for a unified-and-therefore-very-big event…there was the amusing type of madness from seeing IBM execs trying to look comfortable in jeans…and there was the messing-with-our-minds type of madness from seeing a truly cohesive story, and event, and wondering if it actually was dear old IBM that we were witnessing!

Thoughts from IBM Think 2018: Bridging IT Transformation and Digital Transformation

Think 2018 was a massive culmination of multiple and previously separate IBM events (Edge, InterConnect, World of Watson, Amplify, and Connect). While I was never able to get an official headcount, estimates were north of 30,000. And attendees nearly overflowed the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

Exploring the Intelligent Edge at Aruba Atmosphere

Mark Peters and I are looking forward to joining more than 3,000 networking and security professionals at the HPE Aruba Atmosphere conference being held next week under the glittery lights of Las Vegas. It will be great to hear about the latest developments from the Aruba team – which, according to last quarter’s published earnings results, showed strong results, posting a 9% increase. This is the group responsible for driving innovation in campus networks, wireless LAN, and security solutions. I can’t help but think that one of the key reasons this acquisition by HPE has gone smoothly and has been able to achieve impressive growth is because its founder (Keerti Melkote) stayed with the company during the transition and is committed to keeping the company’s culture intact.

HPE Discover in Madrid  (includes video)

Here is my summary video from HPE's latest Madrid installment of its Discover user event series. It's a little different from the usual ESG On Location video format inasmuch as I spent the vast majority of my camera time interviewing HPE execs and customers, rather than my ESG colleagues. The customer interviews were done for HPE and will appear on its channels over the coming weeks. Meantime, in this summary video you'll find sample "snippets" from some of the HPE exec interviews (with full versions to follow soon), together with a comment from me about mega-events in general, and then specifically my key takeaway from Discover in Madrid.

Microsoft Top of Mind for Business after Attending Ignite (Video)

Attendees walked away from Microsoft Ignite and Envision with plentiful ideas and possibilities. This year's event was rich in vision, innovation and business strategy, and aligns well with where businesses remain challenged with cloud, mobility, and security initiatives. Microsoft raised its game and the volume to the enterprise customer and did an admirable job shifting Microsoft to the top of minds of IT pros and business executives.

While Microsoft has made strides in the market, the company also needs to remain humble and empathize with its customers. For example, if a customer is on the latest version of Windows 10 and has strategically positioned apps in Azure while using Microsoft identity and conditional access, then they will have set themselves up with a strong security posture, but not all businesses have achieved this desired state. The onus is then on Microsoft to transform its go-to-market partners and system integrators to help create the market traction and execution success.

Insights from NetApp Insight

It was surreal flying into Vegas on Monday to attend NetApp Insight at the Mandalay Bay hotel. NetApp this week had to deal with something no company ever expects to or should have to deal with: a mass shooting at the venue where their event was to kick off the next morning.
