ESG Senior Lab Analyst Tony Palmer discusses ESG's testing of DataCore SANsymphony and DataCore Hyper-converged Virtual SAN.

Tony: Hello, and welcome to this ESG Lab video summary. Over the next few minutes, I'll be reviewing the results from a recently completed ESG Lab validation of DataCore SANsymphony and DataCore Hyper-converged Virtual SAN. Twenty-seven percent of respondents to an ESG survey cited hardware costs as the biggest storage challenge facing them in 2016, with data growth, data protection, staff costs, and data migration close behind. The data center, as we know it, is in the midst of a significant transformation, and organizations continue to look for ways to simplify operations, increase resource utilization, and improve TCO in IT.
SANsymphony is a storage hardware agnostic, flexible software platform that runs on virtual or physical industry-standard servers and is designed to virtualize any storage, direct-attached, SAN-connected, or in the cloud. SANsymphony supports a wide array of storage devices and hosts connectivity options determined by the HBAs or NICs installed in the DataCore nodes. DataCore software can be installed on dedicated servers to manage very large physical storage pools or configured as a hyper-converged solution residing in the same physical servers hosting virtual machines.
ESG Lab ran a comprehensive set of tests in various configurations. A few highlights are covered in this video. First, ESG Lab tested self-provisioning with VMware Virtual Volumes or VVOLs. VVOLs are an integration and management framework for external storage, providing control at the VM level to simplify storage operations. In just a couple of minutes, ESG Lab defined multiple storage policies then created virtual machines using those policies.
DataCore SANsymphony VVOLs integration made provisioning storage a seamless integrated part of VM creation using predefined storage policies to define performance, availability, and locality of data automatically. DataCore Virtual SAN software is a hyper-converged solution that combines storage, compute, and virtualization into compact industry-standard servers designed to deliver simplified operations, improved agility, and greater flexibility. Virtualizing infrastructure with DataCore Hyper-converged Virtual SAN was intuitive and straightforward.
DataCore Virtual SAN provided a highly available platform for multiple simulated applications. The failover cluster survived a server failure and replacement seamlessly and painlessly while applications remained online and available. DataCore uses their parallel I/O technology to optimize server resources and make the most of their software's advanced performance functionality to enhance system performance.
DataCore has published an excellent result of more than 459,000 SPC-1 I/O operations per second at 100% load with an average response time of only 0.32 milliseconds in a hyper-converged configuration. 0.32 milliseconds is the fastest response time reported on SPC-1 to date. With high performance and low cost, SANsymphony also set a new SPC-1 price performance record with a cost in dollars per SPC-1 IOPS of just 8 cents.
SANsymphony automated storage tiering was tested with a simulated OLTP workload running on a non-tiered storage pool of SAS disk. We added an SSD to the storage pool, and SANsymphony immediately began moving hot or frequently accessed data blocks from the SAS disk to the higher performance flash disk. In this test, SANsymphony's automated storage tiering improved overall IOPS by 700% and reduced load on lower performance tiers improving SAS disk IOPS by 100%.
Traditional storage systems were designed to support many physical servers and a relatively static infrastructure, which complicates every aspect of the virtual world where applications are detached from physical systems and migrate around the environment.
