ESG's Tony Palmer discusses the results of ESG Lab's recent testing of Dell EMC ProtectPoint technology for XtremIO, a solution designed to accelerate backup and recovery of Oracle databases.
Hi and welcome to another ESG Lab Video Summary. I'll be reviewing the results from our testing of Dell EMC ProtectPoint Technology for Extreme IO, a solution designed to accelerate backup and recovery of Oracle databases.
In 2016, ESG found that IT executives cited improving data backup and recovery among their top priorities as their organizations must restore not only production data but application and user access to that data quickly especially with growing data volumes to manage.
Finding the best option for protecting mission critical Oracle databases while minimizing application downtime is always challenging. Traditionally, applications needed to be paused while moving data between application and backup servers as well as between primary and protection storage for backup and restore purposes.
ESG Lab evaluated Dell EMC ProtectPoint as a possible solution but what exactly is it? ProtectPoint integrates primary flash storage, in this case Extreme IO with data domain protection storage using technology that requires Extreme IO to send only unique blocks since the last backup directly to data domain. Data domain de-duplicates those blocks, then creates an independent full backup with the storage efficiency of an incremental backup.
Testing began with backups performed on a traditional NAS appliance and data domain storage leveraging both DD Boost and ProtectPoint.
We ran a script to simulate 15 days of production activity and backups. With DD Boost alone, the average backup time was around two hours, half the time of the NAS appliance. With ProtectPoint, the average backup time decreased to just over 31 minutes. To test recovery time, two restores were performed on the database, before and after running the simulation script. Compared to NAS, restore time using DD Boost decreased by 40 minutes for the new backup and by more than 60 minutes for the old backup. With ProtectPoint, the restore time decreased by more than three and a half hours for both backups.
Why do these results matter? With reduced backup times, application uptime increases allowing business operations to continue with little or no interruption. Reduced backup time is especially beneficial as data volumes continue to grow and reduced recovery time helps businesses return to normal operations after data loss or corruption.
IT mandates for increased speed and agility of backups and restores are demanding a new approach for protecting mission critical applications. ESG Lab validated that ProtectPoint can deliver high performance backup and recovery with minimal downtime to the business.
