Mark: Hi everybody, Mark Bowker here, senior analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group. Today we're going to ask is the Google Chromebook ready to meet business requisites.
I believe it is. We recently went out and asked companies about their plans or initiatives to provide Google Chromebook to its employees. Not only did we discover some potential momentum here. We also uncovered the impact it may have on Microsoft Windows based endpoints. Thirty-five percent expected to issue Chromebooks and that they would replace upwards of 50% of its Windows based footprint. Other respondents chimed in that Chromebook adoption plans have a potential impact but to a lesser effect on the Windows side of things. Then, really only a third said that they had no plans to provide Chromebooks to the employees. It became apparent that IT professionals under the age of 35 are having the strongest potential influence towards these investments.
Google appears as though it's taking on this market one industry at a time. They've seen success in the education market. We had a lot of feedback that that's just a low to no margin business for its partners. If Google can move into other industries like retail, healthcare and niche businesses maybe like transportation logistics then they really have an opportunity to catch the eye of these resellers and OEM partners moreso than they are today. If Google can also bridge the favorable economics with the prospective buyer as they demonstrate a profitability for IT resellers then they also have an opportunity to see some acceleration in the market.
Although Microsoft and even Apple have a foothold inside of businesses, Google does have a play here with apps and devices. The fact that respondents aspire to replace existing Windows based footprint is something that should not be ignored. Also, keep in mind that there is a variety of options to project Windows environment into Google Chromebooks for legacy Windows applications that may exist for some time. This could be just the bridge that's really needed to really light up those productive employees. We're going to continue to watch this closer, understand what the potential market impact is, so please stay tuned. Thanks for joining today.
