ESG Senior Lab Analyst Vinny Choinski discusses ESG's testing of IBM Spectrum Protectv7.1.3. which can help manage cost, data growth, and complexity in modern data protection environments.
Announcer: The following is an ESG Lab video.
Vinny: In spite of the fact that backup and recovery are longstanding IT disciplines, they remain problematic. ESG Research found that only 3% of organizations surveyed reported no data protection challenges of any kind. Our survey data revealed top challenges are associated with cost, data growth, and complexity. ESG Lab recently completed a validation of IBM Spectrum Protect Version 7.1.3, assessing its ability to help manage cost, data growth, and complexity in modern data protection environments.
Our validation demonstrated deployment automation, simplified management, performance, and the ability to deliver data protection as a service in cloud environments. We downloaded and extracted the Spectrum Protect configuration zip file and ran a script provided by the deployment blueprint for small environments. It took approximately eight minutes to prepare the solution for use. We tested a number of new functions with easy-to-use interfaces, including a replication configuration wizard and a web-based self-service restore portal, which can be used by anyone without special skills or software.
Next, we connected to Spectrum Protect via Frontsafe Cloud Portal, a Spectrum Protect add-on for creating, delivering, and managing cloud services. Frontsafe enables complete separation of backup data with a multitenancy model. There is access to billing automation, backup provisioning, reporting, user management, self-service, and RESTful API integration at all levels of the model.
Finally, we validated performance and scalability improvements in Spectrum Protect Version 7.1.3, which introduced container pools and inline deduplication. These capabilities not only deliver faster ingest and replication rates but also improve overall performance by completely eliminating the reclamation process, resulting in significant reduction in the deletion time when container pools are used.
ESG Lab found IBM Spectrum Protect enables advanced data backup and data recovery for virtual, physical, cloud, and software-defined environments, as well as core applications and remote facilities. So why does this matter? IBM is making it easy to deploy Spectrum Protect through blueprints and automation scripts. Enhancement to Spectrum Protect Operations Center simplifies administration and management. Improved performance helps organizations manage data growth with less hardware, software, and operational complexity.
Self-service capabilities make restores more user-friendly and the addition of Frontsafe Cloud Portal software enables any organization to deliver data protection as a service. All this new functionality should help customers manage more data growth and save significant time and money on data protection.
Kudos to IBM for the remarkable transformation they have accomplished with Spectrum Protect, keeping the core attributes in place while delivering agile, automated, modern data protection solution that is easy to deploy, manage, and use.
